Handwoven Textile by Cambodian Women Artisans: A Timeless Tradition
At POASIA, we take pride in offering handwoven throws crafted by skilled Cambodian women artisans. Using traditional techniques, each throw is a unique piece of art that embodies Cambodia's rich heritage.
The Craft of Hand Weaving
Hand weaving is a traditional practice in Cambodia, passed down through generations, ensuring each piece is crafted with meticulous care and precision.
The preparation involves creating a 40 to 100-meter-long weaving chain and winding the thread on a wooden board at the end of the loom. This meticulous and labor-intensive stage requires five women to set up one loom, which is 100 meters long and can produce 50 throws.
Traditional vs. Mechanical Looms
On a traditional handloom, the shuttle is manually thrown from right to left, allowing a weaver to produce 1-2 meters of fabric per day. Consequently, it takes 2-3 days to complete a throw, depending on the design's complexity. In contrast, a mechanical loom can produce 4-5 meters of fabric per day, significantly increasing productivity.
Sustainable and Natural Materials
Our throws are made from 100% natural cotton, dyed and dried using eco-friendly methods. This ensures that our products are not only beautiful but also durable and sustainable.
The vibrant colors come from natural ingredients like plants, Sappan wood, mango, and coconut found in Cambodian villages. It takes one day of spinning and dyeing to achieve the perfect color.
The process begins with boiling the ingredients to prepare the dye. The yarn is then gently immersed in the natural dye bath for three to four hours, depending on the desired color intensity. Afterward, the yarn is rinsed to remove excess dye and allowed to dry for a full day.
Benefits of Natural Dye
- Colorfastness: Ensures the throws maintain their vibrant colors over time.
- Hypoallergenic: Free from chemicals, safe for both children’s and adults’ skin.
- Sustainable: Protects the environment and promotes eco-friendly practices.
- Preserves Tradition: Keeps ancient dyeing techniques alive.
Empowering Women
Hand weaving provides economic independence for women artisans, allowing them to work from home while caring for their families. This craft supports their livelihoods and helps preserve their cultural heritage.
